Industry Dashboard: Datamonitor

entum continues to build in the speech industry. The number of publicly announced speech recognition deals grew from 15 in the January/February timeframe to reach a total of 34 deals year-to-date for 2006. Once again, network-based speech deals accounted for the vast majority of customer wins, as seen in the technology quadrant of the Industry Dashboard. However, PC and embedded speech, together, accounted for more than 25 percent of deals, representing a five percent upward shift in proportion for these technologies over the January/February timeframe. Technology was the hottest vertical for the past two months, accounting for 26.3 percent of deals, followed by communications and retail with each accounting for 15.8 percent. Mobile handset manufacturers and gaming companies deploying embedded- and PC-based speech solutions made up the bulk of customer wins in the technology vertical. Network-based speech deployments in car dealerships, retail outlets and telco carriers accounted for the majority of deals in the communications and retail verticals.

The number of publicly announced customer wins is indeed increasing; however, at its current three-month growth rate it will fall short of the number of deals announced in 2005. Spending on speech solutions is forecasted to gain stronger momentum as the year progresses and peaks in the Q3/Q4 time-frame. By the end of 2006, Datamonitor expects that the cumulative number of customer wins in 2006 will be greater than that of 2005.
