Royal Philips Electronics released a report management solution for Finnish hospitals that is expected to significantly speed up the availability of medical reports and information. Philips SpeechMagic Executive Advanced (SMEA) caters to a variety of medical documentation use cases from dictation and transcription to speech recognition. The system seamlessly integrates with any healthcare infrastructure and features the new Finnish MultiMed ConText for hospital-wide speech recognition.

SMEA can be applied as a stand-alone application or as an integrated solution. The incorporated Finnish MultiMed ConText features specialized terminology for accurate recognition of reports from surgery, internal medicine, gynecology, neurology, psychiatrics, pulmonology, and other specialties. The solution is based on Citrix-ready technology to ensure compatibility with the increasingly popular Citrix Application Delivery Infrastructures.

One hospital that piloted the application was the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District. "Using speech recognition, a dictation is done immediately after the operation – exactly the same way as before. The text is sent to a transcriptionist for review, although in the future, surgeons can also take care of the correction themselves. Due to this, it is possible to improve the quality of dictations and eliminate unnecessary report-creation phases," said Kari Haukipuro, head of surgery at the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District.

Lääkäriasema Pulssi Oy, one of the five biggest private clinics in Finland, has also introduced speech recognition in its radiology department. "Using SpeechMagic Executive Advanced instead of manual typing saves radiologists significant working time," confirmed Timo Kolu, the director of the hospital’s imaging center.

"The Helsinki University Central Hospital released figures that show an improvement in report turnaround time by up to 78 percent," said Björn Aune, regional director Nordics for Philips Speech Recognition Systems. "With speech recognition, reports are available instantly to physicians as well as their patients, hereby supporting faster decisions on further treatment."

SpeechMagic Executive Adanced is available through Philips Speech Recognition Systems’ Finnish distribution partner Oy Konttorityö.
