VIENNA, Austria and RESTON, Va. - Philips Speech Processing (PSP) and Language and Computing (L&C) announce a commercial and technological co-operation agreement. By combining the technologies of both companies, namely Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and Natural Language Understanding (NLU), the system is able to automatically convert dictations into written text, independently extract relevant information from the unformatted text and finally transform it into structured and coded data.

"Eighty percent of the existing information worldwide is captured in the form of unstructured text, that nevertheless is full of business critical information," says Maarten Laga, Chief Executive Officer of L&C. "By joining together our technologies, hospital information systems can accept the spoken word and understand its intent in a manner that is natural to the user as opposed to forcing users to conform to the needs of computers."

Marcel Wassink, Managing Director Philips Speech Recognition Systems, says: "Combining Natural Language Understanding with our market-leading speech recognition software SpeechMagic will enable our dictation solution partners and healthcare IT companies to seamlessly integrate two complex technologies into their solutions to address EPR or HIS applications. This will result in a completely digitalized reporting workflow that transforms dictated reports into text, extracts critical information and structures it with minimal human interaction."
