Nortel Appoints John Roese as CTO and Ravi Chauhan Managing Director of Nortel India

Nortel appointed John J. Roese as chief technology officer.

Roese will be responsible for the company's overall R&D strategy and execution, directing future research across all product portfolios. In addition, he will work closely with the chief strategy officer on emerging technologies, market opportunities and strategic partnerships.

Roese is the inventor of 16 granted and pending patents in the area of policy management, location-based networking and other areas of communications. Roese joins Nortel from Broadcom Corporation, where he was vice president and CTO for networking technologies with a focus on unified communications. Previously, as executive vice president and CTO at Enterasys Networks, he was the principal architect of Enterasys' User Personalized Networking and Secure Networking, and oversaw both long-term and tactical technology strategy. As CTO and Deputy CTO of Cabletron, Roese was one of the key architects of Cabletron's SecureFast Switching.

At Nortel, Roese will lead technology innovation. 

Roese holds a bachelor's degree of science in electrical engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He will report directly to the president and CEO and will be based in Nortel's R&D headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. His appointment is effective June 28, 2006.

Ravi Chauhan has been appointed managing director, Nortel India, responsible for the company's overall business in India effective immediately. He replaces Ashoka Valia who moved back to Canada recently to take up the role of vice president, corporate development.

Chauhan was previously vice president, enterprise solutions for Nortel India. Under his leadership, Nortel was able to grow the enterprise business and became a market leader in India with a string of high profile successes. His leadership philosophy is focused on "sharing the vision" - with customers, with employees, and with all stakeholders in the organization.

Prior to joining Nortel, Chauhan held various executive positions at Digital Equipment India Ltd in India and at Cabletron Systems where he was responsible for driving the service provider business for Asia Pacific. In his new capability, he will continue to be based in Bangalore. Chauhan is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and holds an honors degree in electronics and communication from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.
