SRC Delivers Digital Dictation at Nottingham University Hospitals

Following a successful pilot of the WinScribe digital dictation solution from SRC, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is deploying WinScribe to an additional 1,100 users across eight clinical directorates.

The initial pilot involved more than 250 users in the diabetes, infectious diseases, renal, and cardiology (DIRC) departments, which span two hospital sites. Within one month of the pilot being rolled out, 21 days had been shaved off some turnaround times and urgent clinical correspondence letters were being completed and sent within 24 hours. This is in stark contrast to the previous tape-based dictation processes, where typing backlogs had risen to 15 weeks in some cases.

“The digital dictation solution is a key part of the trust’s new quality and safety-focused ‘Better for You Whole Hospital Change Program.’ The program is all about ensuring no delays in service and making sure we provide patients with fast, accurate, and secure correspondence," said Joan Cornwall, project manager at NUH. "For such a key project, we evaluated different solutions and undertook in-depth site visits. We were impressed with the customer service and time savings SRC delivers. Our selection has been justified by the fact that digital dictation is already saving a lot of time for clinicians, nurses, and admin staff, which is having a positive impact on our patients.”

“Dictations are with the secretaries instantly, rather than arriving several days later, which means the letters leave the hospital much sooner and patients get their results sooner,” said Keith Rigg, a consultant surgeon at NUH.

“The digital dictation solution is fantastic for organizing your work. It shows every single dictation, and it’s much easier to hunt down urgent or specific dictations,” added Andrew Callaway, a medical PA at NUH.

As well as supplying the hardware and software for the project, SRC is also providing project management, implementation, training, and support services.

“Like University Hospitals of Leicester, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is taking a leadership role in the region by adopting the latest digital dictation solution," said Chris Hart, CEO at SRC. "The SRC solution, based upon WinScribe digital dictation technology, is enabling these trusts to rationalize dictation and transcription processes and free up valuable resources. We are excited to be working with NUH and providing another successful, large-scale digital dictation deployment within the NHS.”

NUH is supplying the digital dictation solution under the East Midlands re:source framework agreement, which is available to all member trusts across Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire County, Rutland, and Northamptonshire.
