Brooktrout Plans Environmental Directive for its Voice and Fax Products

NEEDHAM, Mass. - Brooktrout Technology, Inc. released new products that can enable OEM and ISV developers to enhance their voice solutions without costly development.

Brooktrout's TR1000™ family now includes quad density T1/E1 versions along with existing analog, ISDN basic rate interface (BRI) and single/dual T1/E1 versions. Software for the TR1000 has been enhanced with new features for call control and voice recording that provide integration with call centers and hosted services. The quad span TR1000 board is a telephony platform to meet the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive. Brooktrout has also implemented Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) labeling on all European Union products.  These platforms are the first in a series of products that are planned to meet the environmental requirements in advance of the July, 2006 deadline.

The RoHS Directive applies to electrical and electronic products, and their component parts, expected to be offered for sale in the European Union after July 1, 2006. In addition to lead, this law restricts the use of mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and two halide-containing flame retardants: PBB (polybrominated biphenyl) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether). The WEEE Directive, which took effect in August 2005, aims to raise the level of recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and encourages designers to create products with recycling in mind. RoHS supports this by reducing the amount of hazardous chemicals used in production.

With the addition of this new product, Brooktrout delivers a voice processing product line that scales from two to 120 channels per board, and up to 480 channels per system for use with Windows and Unix/Linux operating systems. The TR1000 family is designed around a unified API and Windows certified drivers that allow developers to expand their systems with the quad span board without needing to make any software changes.  In addition, Brooktrout has enhanced it Software Development Kit (SDK) for all TR1000 products with version 4.1 that adds new features for PBX integration with Q.SIG, voice recording with channel summation and voice compression/decompression with GSM and linear CODECs.

Callfinity uses the TR1000 in their suite of Web-based telephony applications for conferencing and message broadcasting. "As we install larger systems we can use the new higher density TR1000 without making any changes to our software," said Jeff Valentine, president of Callfinity. "The performance and flexibility of the TR1000 product line allows us to offer a hosted service or an on-premise product with an attractive growth path and return on investment for our customers."
