Healthcare Veteran Joins M*Modal as New CEO

M*Modal, a provider of clinical documentation and Speech Understanding solutions, announced that healthcare IT industry veteran Scott MacKenzie has joined the company as CEO, replacing Duncan James. MacKenzie joins M*Modal after having served as CEO of Passport Health Communications, purchased by Experian in 2013. Since the acquisition, he has been president of Experian Health.

M*Modal has seen a turbulent year. In May, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing a decline in sales and mounting debt despite being the number two healthcare speech provider at the time. In August, the company emerged from Chapter 11 after a financial restructuring and reducing its debt by 55 percent.

M*Modal has since rebounded and has introduced updated software and partnerships with other organizations. In September, the company added computer-assisted physician documentation (CAPD) to its M*Modal Fluency Direct speech software. The new capability provides real-time feedback to physicians as they dictate or type clinical documentation in electronic health record (EHR) systems. M*Modal has made alliances with healthcare providers including Athenahealth, Flagler Hospital, and Marin General Hospital.

"M*Modal has a unique combination of talent, assets and relationships that creates tremendous potential in how it can impact healthcare and serve customers," MacKenzie said in a statement. "I am joining M*Modal at a time when the company is positioned for change and the market is open to solutions that improve productivity and leverage technology investments. I look forward to working with M*Modal's talented team to deliver on its vision to be the industry's best clinical documentation provider."
