Kurzweil Educational Systems Releases Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 10

Kurzweil Educational Systems unveiled Kurzweil 3000 for Windows Version 10 at the 2006 California State University of Northridge (CSUN) "Technology and Persons with Disabilities" Conference in Los Angeles. Kurzweil 3000 is a reading, writing and learning software for struggling students.

Remote License-to-Go gives teachers and students access to Kurzweil 3000 while using a computer that is not connected to a Kurzweil 3000 Network. This option is useful for students who use Kurzweil 3000 on a home computer that cannot be brought to school. Now, students can do their assignments at both school and home. In addition, parents can also become active participants in their children's homework.

Another new feature is Broadcast Feature Locks from Server, which lets you use the Server Administrator software to disable, enable, or leave "as is" selected Kurzweil 3000 features on multiple client computers, making it invaluable for many scenarios such as administering tests, protecting documents, or providing user interface consistency.

New features of both the network and standalone editions of Version 10:

  • Kurzweil 3000 Taskbar - Key Kurzweil 3000 features, such as reading, word lookup, and spell check, are now available in any program that is running on the local machine. Use the Kurzweil 3000 Taskbar with Email or word processing programs for example, with or without Kurzweil 3000 running.
  • Save Toolbars and Feature Locks in Documents - These options are useful if you are distributing a document (for example, a test) and want to provide a consistent set of toolbars/buttons and control which Kurzweil 3000 features are available while interacting with the document.
  • Toolbar Toggles - Quickly show and hide toolbars at any time by clicking the toolbar's Toggle, which is a narrow colored bar that runs along the left side of each toolbar.
  • Override OCR Feature - Gain great flexibility in the scanning process as this feature enables you to convert unrecognized text (for example, large or unusual font or text with wide word spacing that is typical of titles and headings) into zones that Kurzweil 3000 can read.
  • Header/Footer Editor - Many types of documents have headers and footers that you may not want to read aloud. With the Header/Footer Editor, you can mark areas of an image document so that Kurzweil 3000 does not read it.
  • New Circle Text Feature - Useful for test taking, this option allows you to circle words in an image file.
  • Spell Checking As You Type - Red underlining alerts you to misspelled words as you type.
  • More Documentation Tools to Get More Out of Kurzweil 3000 - "How To Videos" give quick overviews of major Kurzweil 3000 features, while the Online Help offers full text search to find the right help information.
  • Share Different Lists and Dictionaries - Version 10 offers an easy way to use the same Pronunciation and Word Prediction Dictionaries, as well as OCR Corrections and Vocabulary Lists.
  • Animated GIF Picture Dictionary Support - This new feature gives you support for animated GIF files such as the American Sign Language (ASL) animations available from Vcom3D, Inc., giving access to ASL signs for the deaf and those who want to learn American Sign Language.
  • Expanded Reference Access - Version 10 adds newspaper and magazine access for those users with a Bookshare.org account through NFB-Newsline® in electronic form (Subscription to Bookshare.org is   required, access to newspapers is based on funding at a state level.) In addition, Version 10 provides online access to Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary.
  • Talking Calculator - Take advantage of full-function talking standard, statistics, scientific, and business calculators.
