Nuance Launches Speech-Enabled Medical Transcription Services Offering

Nuance Communications has launched an outsourced transcription services offering that expands Nuance’s clinical documentation solutions portfolio. Nuance Transcription Services leverages Nuance’s speech-enabled transcription platforms to deliver medical records service through a workflow where Nuance manages the complete clinical documentation process.

Nuance Transcription Services combines Nuance’s proprietary eScription speech recognition platform with its global medical transcription and editing services team. Nuance Transcription Services also draws upon strengths and resources from two recently acquired leaders in medical transcription outsourcing, Outsourcing Solutions and Encompass Medical Transcription.

“With the expansion of our fully integrated Nuance Transcription Services, we’re eliminating healthcare organizations’ need to administer and manage traditional clinical documentation processes,” said Janet Dillione, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Healthcare. “Nuance’s robust medical transcription offerings deliver tremendous value to healthcare organizations by supporting their path to [electronic health records] and meaningful Use, and by enabling them to create cost-effective, high-quality medical records.”

Nuance Transcription Services provides multiple benefits to healthcare organizations. For example, Nuance provides a flexible set of workflow options for clinicians, empowering them to create documents in the most efficient way possible—by speaking into a phone, mobile dictation device such as an Apple iPhone or directly into an electronic health record (EHR), while speech recognition technology produces formatted draft documents.

“On average, we’re processing 800,000 lines of medical transcription every month with Nuance. As part of the workflow, Nuance is our single point-of-contact for dictation, medical transcription and documentation issues; this allows us to focus on other top level priorities including patient care and EHR initiatives,” said Stephanie K. Ho, operations supervisor for health information management at Tampa General Hospital in Florida. ”Through our use of eScription, we’ve been able to create an environment in which physicians are happy and can rely upon high-quality reports that are available in accordance with specified turnaround times; reports are 99 percent to 100 percent accurate when they come back from transcription. The combination of quality, cost savings and efficiency that we’ve been able to achieve by not having to fully manage this process has been tremendous.”

The transcription workflow management and speech recognition components of Nuance Transcription Services are housed within secure hosted data centers.
