SRC Provides Dictation and ASR Solutions to Hammersmith Hospitals

LONDON -- SRC will deploy the WinScribe digital dictation and Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition systems from Nuance Communications throughout the Histopathology Department at Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. The new solutions will help reduce labor-intensive processes by automating and streamlining the way doctors and consultants capture, manage, and create documents.

The WinScribe digital dictation system has been specifically tailored for the Histopathology Department to provide a hands-free method for doctors and consultants to dictate using wireless headsets and pneumatic foot pedals in cut-up rooms.

"We felt workplace and process efficiency could be improved by replacing the existing tape-based and hand-written methods of dictation," explains Dr. Nick Francis, a consultant pathologist at Hammersmith Hospital. "Currently doctors or technical staff need an assistant to take notes during cut up, or dictate onto conventional tape that needs to be physically handed to the appropriate typing resource. The SRC solution provides a streamlined means for our pathologists to dictate while working and automatically prioritizing and instantly sending dictations for transcription.

"In addition, the increasing volume of dictations that needed to be typed was putting increased pressure on secretaries," he continued. "The ability to produce documents quickly and against tight deadlines is fundamental to our ability to deliver better healthcare to the London communities we serve. With the speech recognition software we can create professional documents within minutes, which provides a significant time saving for us."
